Passage

Our income, education, family, environment, society and friends all affect our domain of happiness. We might not always have the desired income needed to fulfill the wishes or may be the career isn't going as smooth as we had planned. So what does it do to us? Does it burst our balloon of hope and excitement or does it renew our hopes, makes us clear our visions and set ahead for the future with new motivation? How do you react when things don't turn out as you had planned? Most importantly, is your reaction appropriate or do you need to change your attitude and perception?

Question 1: Which sentence relates aspirations to happiness?

  • a) The first sentence. (Our income, education…happiness.)
  • b) The second sentence. (We might not…planned.)
  • c) The third sentence. (So what does…us.)
  • d) The fourth sentence. (Does it burst…motivation.)
  • e) The fifth sentence. (How do you…planned?)
Correct Answer: (b)

Explanation: The author is trying to question us on what makes us happy and how we react in crucial times. He says that a number of factors influence our happiness. He relates aspirations to happiness in the second sentence. In the first sentence, he relates different aspects of life with happiness and in the second sentence, he implies that money helps us fulfill our wishes. Hence, we need money to fulfill our desires, which is why income is mentioned in the first sentence. Consequently, our aspirations are related with happiness and the correct sentence is the second sentence.

Question 2: Which sentence invokes introspection?

  • a) The second sentence. (We might not…planned.)
  • b) The third sentence. (So what does…us.)
  • c) The fourth sentence. (Does it burst…motivation.)
  • d) The fifth sentence. (How do you…planned?)
  • e) The sixth sentence. (Most importantly, is…perception?)
Correct Answer: (e)

Explanation: The author asks us to think about how we react when we have to face failures. He asks us if failure kills our hopes or makes us more motivated to fulfill our dreams. The sentence that invokes introspection is the last sentence. In this sentence, the author asks us if our reactions are appropriate or not. He asks us to introspect and see if we need to change our attitude or perception. The correct sentence thus is the last sentence.

Question 3: Which sentence is free of all suppositions and interrogations?

  • a) The first sentence. (Our income, education…happiness.)
  • b) The second sentence. (We might not…planned.)
  • c) The third sentence. (So what does…us.)
  • d) The fourth sentence. (Does it burst…motivation.)
  • e) The fifth sentence. (How do you…planned?)
Correct Answer: (a)

Explanation: The last few sentences are interrogative in nature. This leaves us with the first two sentences only. Out of these two, the first sentence is a definite statement and the second is not. The second statement is based on suppositions and probability. The author states the parameters of happiness in the first sentence and this is the correct answer option.
