Everything you want to know about the GRE Exam Cost

How expensive is it to take the GRE?

Taking the GRE is a very tough task where studies are concerned, but the financial aspect of taking the test is not easy either. You will have to go easy on your pocket if you are taking the test as you will have to shell out money at almost every stage of the process for taking the exam. Listed below are some of the milestones where you will be spending money.

  • Preparing for the GRE: Your test preparation is incomplete without a good set of study materials to study from. Although you may get some study materials free of cost, you will have to spend a significant amount of money in getting good quality of study materials like books, sets of practice tests, flash cards etc. If you wish to carry out your preparation by attending a course, then you may have to spend even more as the reputed preparation courses are quite expensive.
  • Registering for the GRE: You will have to pay a registration fee for taking the test. This fee varies depending upon when you are taking the test and the location where you are taking the GRE from.

  • Subsequent changes: You will have to pay an additional amount if you wish to make some changes like change of test date or test centre after you have registered for the test.

The amount that you will need to spend during test preparation depends upon the method and resources you utilize for your preparation. So this amount will vary from person to person depending upon individual requirements. ETS is the organisation that administers the test. ETS offers a wide variety of study materials some of which are free of cost and others are available at a nominal price. You should definitely get hold of all the study materials that are offered free of cost. Go through the list of paid study materials and choose the ones that you would like to buy. The official website, www.ets.org contains details of both free and priced study materials that are available.

However, the exam cost will remain the same for all test–takers taking the exam from the same location. Therefore, you should be aware of the policies governing the cost so that you know the minimum cost involved in taking the test.

What is the basic GRE Exam Cost?

The GRE is offered as a computer-based test in most test centres across the world. The paper-based test is offered only in those test centres where the computer-based test is not available. The basic cost is dependent upon the location from where you are going to take the test. The format of the test is about to undergo a change and the revised test will be in effect from August 1, 2011. Because of this, there is a variation in the fee for the standard test administration depending upon when you register for the test.

  • During August or September 2011: ETS has announced a 50% Savings Offer wherein the exam cost is $80 if you are taking the test from the United States, U.S. Territories and Puerto Rico and the cost will be $95 if you are taking the test from any of the remaining locations.
  • After September 30, 2011: The cost will be $160 if you are taking the test from the United States, U.S. Territories and Puerto Rico and the cost will be $190 if you are taking the test from any of the remaining locations.

Are there any other fees added to the GRE exam cost?

Yes, apart from the basic fee for registering for the GRE, there are some additional fees that will be added to the fee for the standard test administration depending upon your requirements. Moreover, the taxes payable will also be added to the exam cost.

  • Late registration fee: If you miss the deadline for registering for the paper-based test using the online registration method, then you will need to pay $25 as additional fee.
  • Standby testing: If you wish to request for standby testing, then you will have to pay $50 as the additional fee. However, this is available for the paper-based test only.
  • Rescheduling: You will have to pay an additional amount of $50 if you wish to change your test date after you have already registered for a particular test date.
  • Change of test centre: A request for change of test centre after you have already registered for a particular test centre will be entertained only after you have paid an additional fee amounting to $50.
  • Scores by phone: You can avail the facility of getting your scores by phone by paying an additional amount of $12.
  • Additional score reports: Your scores will be sent to upto four graduate schools. These recipients will be of your choice and you will designate the recipients at the test centre (computer-based GRE) or at the time of registering for the GRE (paper-based GRE). You can later increase the number of recipients of your test scores by paying an amount of $23 for each additional recipient.
  • Score reviews: You can avail the facility of score review service by paying $50 for the Verbal Reasoning & Quantitative Reasoning test sections and another $55 for the Analytical Writing test section.
  • Hand scoring for paper-based GRE: You can get hand scoring done for the multiple-choice questions of the paper-based GRE by paying $30.
  • Score reinstatement: You can request for score reinstatement by paying $30.

ETS reserves the right to change the fee amounts or the fees policies. You can visit the official website, www.ets.org for more details regarding the costs for taking the GRE.
