Registering for GRE

'WHEN', 'HOW' AND 'WHERE' OF REGISTERING FOR GRE

It is common knowledge that one needs to prepare well for taking the GRE. Good scores are the stepping stones to success as they will help you to complete your education with the reputed graduate program that you have always wished to join. Although admission committees consider your scores along with other inputs like your qualifications and letters of recommendations, your test scores play a crucial role in determining your success in securing admission to a graduate program of your choice. However, before you can achieve your aspirations, the first step to be taken is to register for the test.

When should you register for the GRE?

It is very important to choose the right date for taking the GRE. It is largely dependent on the factors listed below:

  • The most important factor that decides the time when you should register for the test is the date by which you require your scores. Your scores will be available for a finite time after you have taken the test; so you should plan on registering at such a time that you have your scores in hand when they are required to be submitted to the recipients. The official website, www.ets.org contains detailed information about the score reporting schedule based on the test dates. You should get in touch with the colleges where you are applying for admission and get information related to the last date for submission of scores.
  • Another factor that affects your plans for registering for the test is the amount of time you will need to prepare for the test. You will need to give yourself at least two to three months of time for thorough preparation for taking the exam. Therefore, you should plan on registering for the test accordingly.
  • The current General test is being replaced by the Revised General Test from August 2011, the scores of which will be available by November only. If you are going to need your scores before November 2011, then you should plan on registering for the exam well in time and take it before August1 2011.
  • The computer-based version of the test is conducted throughout the year across the US and in other countries too. However, there are certain test centres where the computer-based format is not available and so the paper-based format of the test is offered in such test centres. The paper-based test is conducted only thrice in a year. Moreover, all test centres are not open on all dates. Therefore, before registering for the test you should check the format of the test being offered at the test centre where you plan to take the test. This information will be available at the official website.
