When should you register for the GRE?

It is very important to choose the right date for taking the GRE. Registering for GRE is largely dependent on the factors listed below:

  • The most important factor that decides the time when you should register for GRE is the date by which you require your GRE scores. Your GRE scores will be available for a finite time after you have taken the GRE; so you should plan on registering for GRE at such a time that you have your GRE scores in hand when they are required to be submitted to the recipients. The official website of GRE, www.ets.org contains detailed information about the score reporting schedule based on the GRE test dates. You should get in touch with the colleges where you are applying for admission and get information related to the last date for submission of GRE scores.

  • Another factor that affects your plans for registering for GRE is the amount of time you will need to prepare for GRE. You will need to give yourself at least two to three months of time for thorough preparation for taking the GRE. Therefore, you should plan on registering for GRE accordingly.
  • The current GRE General test is being replaced by the Revised GRE General Test from August 2011, the scores of which will be available by November only. If you are going to need your GRE scores before November 2011, then you should plan on registering for GRE well in time and take it before August1 2011.
  • The computer-based version of the GRE is conducted throughout the year across the US and in other countries too. However, there are certain GRE test centres where the computer-based format of the GRE is not available and so the paper-based format of the GRE is offered in such test centres. The paper-based GRE is conducted only thrice in a year. Moreover, all test centres are not open on all dates. Therefore, before registering for GRE you should check the format of GRE being offered at the test centre where you plan to take the GRE. This information will be available at the official website of GRE.
