WHEN AND HOW SHOULD YOU REGISTER FOR GRE
WHAT IS GRE
The GRE exam is a computer-adaptive test required for admission to graduate schools in English-speaking countries. In a particular year, you can take it up to 5 times. It is also offered as a paper-based test in locations where computer access is not available. The paper-based test can be taken up to 3 times a year. The GRE General Test has been revised and coming into effect from August 1, 2011. If you need your scores before November 2011, you can take up the current test before August. The scores for the revised GRE General test in August and September 2011 will be sent in mid November 2011.
TIPS TO REGISTER FOR GRE

- You need to pay only 50% of the test fee if you register for the revised GRE General Test between August 1 and September 30, 2011.
- Registering for GRE directly at a test center offers you the benefit of having your fee reduced by 50%, which will be refunded to you once your registration is through.
- A detailed study of the fee structure and policies and regulations for rescheduling and cancelling of the test should be done.
- If you are disabled in some way or require some form of extended break during the test, you can refer the accommodation procedures that can be viewed in the official website, www.ets.org/gre.
- From August 1, 2011, test-takers in China, Taiwan, Korea, and Hong Kong will take up the test as a computer-based test in one day.
- Your registration will not be transferred to anyone.
- You will not be able to take the test on any day you want in any test center.
- You can send your scores to up to 4 graduate schools or sponsors wherein you will be asked the particular schools you want to apply to. This can be done when registering for the test or at the test center.
- You can opt to register for the FREE GRE Search Service when you register for the GRE.
- Of prime importance, the name that you have registered for the GRE test should be identical to the one on your ID documents that you have on the test day. If there is any discrepancy, you will be barred from taking up the test.

WAYS TO REGISTER FOR GRE COMPUTER-BASED TEST
For American citizens, there are 3 ways to register for GRE. They are:
- Web – registering online through your credit or debit card can be done. The cards applicable are American Express, MasterCard, VISA, JCB, or Discover. This is not applicable to examinees in Nigeria
- Phone – using American Express, MasterCard, VISA, JCB, Discover or a voucher number. If you register for GRE directly at a test center, you have to pay the fee in full which will be reduced by half once your registration is processed. You can also call the test center directly or the Prometric Candidate Services Call Center through their helplines. The confirmation number, test center, and reporting time will be given when you call them.
- Mail – download to fill up the PDF format of the Authorization Voucher Request Form in the GRE bulletin. Mail the fee and the voucher form to the required address given on the voucher. Around 3 weeks is allotted for processing and mail delivery. The payment should be done by check or money order. After receiving your voucher, you can call for an appointment before the expiry date. In case you lose the voucher, ETS will provide you with only one voucher.
For individuals testing outside the U.S., they cannot take the test on any preferable day. Test-takers in China, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan can register through the My GRE Account. They can register for GRE in 2 ways, which are:
- Online – you can register for GRE through your My GRE Account. Payment is by credit/debit card (American Express, MasterCard, VISA, JCB, Discover, E-check and PayPal). This is not applicable to examinees in Nigeria and physically disabled people.
- Mail – payment by check or money order. You can download and fill the form online in the GRE bulletin and send the form to the address printed on the form. This should be done before the test expiry date. Registration forms cannot be faxed. It takes a total of 4 weeks to be processed.
In case of registering for GRE Subject Tests, there are 4 ways of registration which are:
- Web – online registration by American Express, MasterCard, VISA, and JCB. This option is not available to test-takers in Nigeria. In China, examinees need to check instructions in the NEEA account for fee payment. For test-takers in Hong Kong, the payments can be done by E-check drawn against U.S. bank accounts and PayPal. Physically disabled or handicapped persons cannot register for the GRE online.
- Phone - payment through American Express, MasterCard, VISA, JCB, or a voucher number. You need to call the Regional Registration Centers at least 2 working days before the desired test date. A confirmation number, test time, and test center address will be given to you. Phone registration is not available to residents of Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
- Fax- fee payment through American Express, MasterCard, VISA, JCB, or a voucher number. Faxing the International Test Scheduling form to the Regional Registration Center has to be done 7 days prior to your preferred test date. A confirmation number, test time, and test center address will be faxed, mailed or e-mailed to you. You will be given a test time, date and location. If you are not in favour of the scheduled date, you can opt for the next test scheduled and call the (RCC) Regional Registration Center for any requirements within 24 hours of your GRE test confirmation. Suppose you do not receive any confirmation regarding your test date, call them 3 days before your test and if you do not call them even after not receiving any confirmation, your test fee will not be refunded. Fax registration is not an option for test takers in China, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
- Mail – mailing the International Test Scheduling Form to the Regional Registration Center with payment fee. This should be sent 3 weeks before your preferred test date. A confirmed number, test time, and test center address will be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to you. The date and time along with the location will be sent to you. If you are not agreeable with the scheduled date, you can take up the next scheduled test and have to call the Regional Registration Center within 24 hours. If you have not received any confirmation mail from them, you will have to call them 3 days prior to the test date. If you do not call the Center for confirmation of your registration, your fee will not be refunded. Mail registration is not provided for test-takers in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea.
GRE TEST PREFERENCES
- Applying for a supplementary test center: If you are assigned a test center that is far, you can request for a test center along with registration form and payment fee and details of why the particular test center was not suitable. This has to be sent within the registration date. Also, submit the name and address of a college and staff willing to monitor the test and you can request for another date or time for the GRE test.
- Standby Testing: Supposing you miss registering for the GRE exam on the required date, you can go the test center on the exam date at 8.15 in the morning with a paper-based registration form, and your photograph as ID proof. You also have to pay standby fee along with the test fee. Arriving early before the scheduled GRE exam, you can request the authorities to allow you to sit for the exam. They might do so provided there are sufficient test papers, space for you to sit and administrators are available. It also depends on whether a candidate appearing for the exam has cancelled the test or does not appear for the exam.
- Monday Testing: Candidates who do not want to sit for the GRE exam on Saturday due to their religious beliefs can register for the GRE. A paper-based registration form with fee and letter signed by the cleric on the letterhead stationery that signifies you are of a particular religious sect. This should be sent early before the expiry of the registration date with the test date not filled in, and only the particular test center, city and state that you prefer to test. No standby testing is allowed.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF GRE
You can also attempt the GRE subject tests if you do want to keeping in mind the particular requirements of the colleges that you wish to apply to. The particular dates for tests to be taken after August 1, 2011 and their scores can be viewed at the official website, www.ets.org/gre. Test fees and schedules for GRE computer-based test and paper-based tests are not interchangeable. There are particular rules that need to be followed by candidates while registering for GRE. It is not uniform for all test-takers. It varies for international test-takers when compared to American residents or citizens who attempt the GRE test.
