Why should you register for GRE Test in Time?

Preparing for the GRE test, revising the syllabus, practicing with dedication and commitment are all necessary. However, awareness of all the details of the process of registration for GRE and registering for the GRE test in time also play a vital role in determining your scores in the GRE exam.

Why Should You Register for the GRE in Time?

You must plan way ahead of your preparation to register for GRE test because registering on time relaxes you and you can concentrate more on studying for the exam as an important part of taking the GRE has been taken care of.
You will have to select a test date and test centre of your choice when you register for GRE test. They will be available only if you book your slot many days before your choice of date. This is because the seats at the test centres are limited and you may not be able to take the GRE at a centre of your choice if you delay your registration.
After your exam, the scores you obtain must reach the college you designate before their deadline. Different colleges will have different deadlines for submission of GRE scores. Test takers who take the test between August 1, 2011 and September 8, 2011 will receive their scores by approximately November 8, 2011. So, you must carefully plan your test so as to ensure that your scores reach the colleges you have designated well in time.

GRE Registration Process

The GRE is administered in two different formats, computer based and paper based format. You can register for both the test formats using different registration methods. You can register for GRE test online, by phone, through fax or via mail for the computer based test format. You can register for the paper based test only on web or by mail.

Read all the rules and regulations given in the official website before you proceed with applying for the GRE test.
You must be aware of all the important test deadlines before you confirm your candidature for the test. This link will also have all the information regarding the paper based testing dates and centres. Paper based testing is administered only in those places where there are insufficient computing facilities to administer a computer based test.
You will be allowed to attempt the GRE test only once in two months, be it the paper based test or the computer based test.

Online GRE Registration

You can register for the GRE online for both the computer based test and also the paper based test at the official GRE website: www.ets.org

Firstly, you must know the GRE test format available in your country. You can get this information from the link: www.ets.org/bin/getprogram.cgi?test=gre.
You will find ‘Sign in to register for the test’ at the link provided above. You can directly click on this and register for GRE test online.
You can also log on to the official website and register for GRE test online by going to the link: www.ets.org.
Before you register for GRE test, you will have to create ‘My GRE account’ through which you can register for GRE test, pay for the test, schedule your test and choose a test centre. You can later reschedule or request for a refund by cancelling your test. Creating ‘My GRE account’ does not essentially make you eligible for the testing.
While creating your account, be very careful and provide genuine information without making any mistakes because the information that you enter here will be your final identity for taking the GRE.
Through ‘My GRE account’, you can pay your exam fees which will not be accepted in cash and must only be paid through a credit/debit card or an E-check.
Once you have confirmed the registration, you will not be allowed to change your information. So, check through your details cautiously. Any subsequent correspondence will be made to the contact information you mention there.

GRE Test Registration on Phone:

You can register for the GRE on phone too. You can avail this service only for registering for the computer based test. You cannot use this method for registering for the paper based test. You will be assisted by the Regional Registration Centres (RRC’s) in this process.

You can register by calling the RRC for your region.
The mailing addresses and phone numbers of all the RRC’s are available at the link: www.ets.org/s/mygre/rrc.html.
When your registration is complete, you will be mailed the test centre and test date details.
You can only pay with a credit/debit card. Cash is not accepted.
Test takers from Mainland China, Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong cannot register for GRE test on phone.

GRE Registration via Fax

You can register only for the computer based GRE using this service. You cannot register for the paper based GRE via fax.

Download the ‘International Test Scheduling Form’ which is available in the PDF version at the link: www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/intl_test_scheduling_form.pdf.
Registration through fax can be done by faxing the above form after filling it.
You can only pay with a credit/debit card. Cash is not accepted.
When your registration is complete, you will be mailed the test centre and test date details.
Test takers from Mainland China, Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong cannot register for GRE test via fax.

GRE Registration via Mail

You can register for both the computer based and paper based formats of GRE via mail by following the same procedure as mentioned under registration via fax except that you will have to mail the filled up form instead of faxing it. You will receive your confirmation number, test date and test centre details by mail once you have successfully completed the registration process.

If you do not receive a confirmation after completing the registration process through fax or on mail, you will have to notify the concerned RRC at least 3 working days before the test date, else you will not be refunded the fee amount.

GRE Registration Costs

Registering for the GRE costs you US $160 if you hail from countries other than US, its territories and Puerto Rico.
You will be charged US $140 if you are from the US, its territories and Puerto Rico.
There is an introductory offer of 50% savings on the GRE test fee if you take the test between August 1, 2011 and September 30, 2011.

Plan ahead and prepare well for the test. Allot at least two weeks of time before the exam to revise the entire syllabus by taking a test daily and also assessing it. Try to maintain consistency in your study routine. Stay focused and confident to score high in the exam.
