What is the Perfect GRE Score?
It is not appropriate to decisively mark out a certain set of GRE scores as the perfect GRE score for everyone, as the required scores for each aspirant differ according to the graduation course and the college they wish to join. What may be the aimed score for one candidate might be nowhere close to what another aspirant aims to score. Every candidate has one’s own set of strengths-weaknesses and choices on which the scores depend. It is better that before setting a score aim, one collects information about the requisites of the colleges and universities in which one aspires to apply. Many colleges mention the required scores on their websites or their prospectus etc. In many cases, having cleared GRE is not required at all or there are no fixed scores for allowing students an admission into the various courses. So, it is necessary that all these points are clear in front of the candidate well before he/she starts preparing for the test.
The highest score or the ultimate-perfect GRE score that one could achieve till August 2011 was 800 each in verbal reasoning and quantitative sections and 6 in analytical writing section. Though people have been known to achieve 800s in the past, a score through 650 to 750 (in the verbal and quantitative sections), is also considered excellent. The scoring range as per the new GRE scoring pattern is from 130 to 170. The analytical writing section can fetch a maximum of 5.5 for a candidate but the other two sections carry more importance. The required score in each section also varies with the course being applied for. For many courses, the verbal reasoning skills are needed to be sharper than the quantitative abilities and for some it is the other way round. To get the perfect GRE score, this fact has to be kept in mind by the applicant well in advance and the preparation should be based on it.

The verbal reasoning section is meant to test the reading comprehension and reasoning ability of the candidates. With the introduction of the new GRE test pattern, the stress on having a large vocabulary is no longer there. The emphasis now is on the ability of the candidate to read and analyse carefully before answering the questions but one definitely requires having a strong vocabulary for analytical writing. The verbal section has sentence equivalence questions, text completion questions and reading comprehension exercises which have nothing in them that can be learnt beforehand. Thus, the way to get the perfect GRE score in this section is through practice, and lots of practice! A simple and easy method is to lay hands on some high school English practice books as they contain lots of reading comprehension exercises. Or one can even seek help from a sibling or friend to create some exercises for the sake of practice. The pattern being new, it is quite possible that one doesn’t find the questions according to it in the GRE practice books and papers but one can find the sample papers on the official GRE site (i.e. www.ets.org).
One cannot memorise answers or formulae for this section, what needs to be mastered instead, is the ability to answer swiftly. With constant practice, it becomes easy for candidates to find accurate answers in the given passages without taking much time or effort.
The quantitative section of the test is based on the high school mathematics syllabus. The new pattern does not change anything in the syllabus but the stress will now be on more real-life scenarios. The question types are multiple choice, numeric data entry and quantitative comparisons. One needs to have an alert mind more than having strong mathematical concepts so as to tackle this part of the test to get one’s perfect GRE score.
A very simple and fruitful strategy that can be used by the candidates, who have a lot of time in front of them, is to teach mathematics. One can start conducting coaching classes for high school students by which all the basic concepts can be brushed up. Also while teaching the students, one can practice as much as possible and one develops a keen eye for spotting errors and comparative figures. Apart from the practice, one ends up having extra pocket money in one’s hands which is an additional benefit of this strategy. For those who have less time to prepare, they should pick up some good GRE practice books and try to solve all the exercises contained in them. Don’t forget to take some timed sample and mock tests for this section so that time is also managed well on the day of the test.
The success in achieving the perfect GRE score in the analytical writing section of the test depends on how well one can write and express opinions on various topics. It is a fact indeed that all the GRE candidates cannot possess the talent of being good writers. For many, it can be a weakness! What needs to be understood is that it is not completely about the art of writing essays but about having a critical eye towards the topic given. The candidate should not directly start writing as soon as the question comes in front of him/her. First, one should understand the multiple facets of the topic given, make a rough list of the various points related to it and then start writing the essay. A good vocabulary is needed for this section as usage of good words can strengthen the overall impact of the essay.
The aspirants who aim for the perfect GRE score should incorporate a habit of taking up one topic everyday for the practice for this section. More time one has for preparation, more will be the number of topics covered and more will be the practice done to handle this section.
The revision in the test pattern has brought a very nice change in the test process which will ease one’s path to the perfect GRE score. The rule that prohibited the candidates to skip questions in the test and not be able to return to them later has been relaxed now. The candidates can come back to a question after answering all other questions, thus not spending precious time over one question at the expense of the rest of the test. Mentioning this revision in the test process becomes important when we talk about the perfect GRE score as many aspirants were not able to achieve their desired score due to the limitations posed by it. The relaxation of the rule brings relief to aspirants as many cases have been seen in which the aspirants wasted time on one question and could not attempt many other questions because of it. Now, if any of the questions is confusing for the candidate, one can come back to it later and solve it. This will save the time and energy of the candidates and they can feel relaxed about the GRE test pattern.
Every aspirant can find out revision techniques and methods according to their own comfort and ease. Whatever might be the method in which one approaches the test and their perfect GRE score, it is important to be fully prepared to face the test on the D-day. Ultimately, it is never the fact that how one has prepared, but how well one has prepared that carries importance and puts an impact on one’s future. So, get-set-prepare and hit the GRE right on the target to get that perfect GRE score about which you have been dreaming.
