GRE Verbal Vocabulary
The vocabulary section has the vastest syllabus among all the sections of GRE. Reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence questions in all make a total of 30 questions which can be the most difficult to answer as there is no other edge once the preparation for it is started. One can go on and on trying to identify various words of English. After all, one cannot memorize all the words, their meanings, their opposites; that are there in the English language. So, the only key to tackle this section efficiently is practice and lots of practice.
There are separate GRE preparation books and other study materials that concentrate only on the verbal section. But the most trusted and popular study materials for this section of the test are the GRE vocabulary flashcards. The flashcards are small cue cards that have one question on each of them. The reason that makes them popular is their compact size and high portability. A candidate can put the cards in the pocket, or purse, or handbag and carry them along everywhere. Whenever there is a chance to sit back, in a bus, while having coffee at a cafe or likewise; the cards can be pulled out and one can solve a few questions. They are the best method to study when one is on the move. What better way can be there to stuff long lists of English words in one’s pocket?
Traditionally available only as an additional feature in GRE preparation books, the GRE vocabulary flashcards are now available in many forms-
This was the traditional form in which these flashcards started being available to the aspirants. Till date they can be seen as parts of the GRE preparation books. They are made of thick paper and have important vocabulary questions printed on them which can be practiced by the candidate. Though they come as a part of the thick GRE books, they are completely detachable. They can be pulled-out and piled into sets of GRE vocabulary flashcards.
One can also use separate GRE flashcard sets that are printed by Princeton Review and Kaplan’s –publishing houses renowned for their quality of GRE study materials. These sets can be ordered online and are mailed directly at the candidate’s address. The link for ordering Kaplan’s flashcards is- http://www.amazon.com/GRE-Exam-Vocabulary-Flashcards-Kaplan/dp/1419541943.
There are various sources on the internet through which GRE vocabulary flashcards can be downloaded and then printed. Hundreds of flashcards are available on the internet which can be very helpful to the candidates as they practice for the vocabulary section. These flashcards designed on the basis of the most commonly occurring words in the test and thus carry important questions in them. Some of the links that give access to the downloadable GRE vocabulary flashcards are- http://www.gradflash.com/GRE-Vocabulary-Flashcards-Downloads.html, http://www.soundkeepers.com/GRE/ etc.
The flashcards can be downloaded from these websites and got printed to have one’s own set of flashcards to practice for the verbal section.
The drawback of the printed GRE vocabulary flashcards is that they can be used only once. A flashcard cannot be re-used for practice by a candidate and secondly, the bundles of flashcards, however small they might be, are not convenient to use at all places. There can always be a risk of them getting spilled or lost while moving. Giving a solution to these problems are the online flashcards which have been created for the final test like practice of the section. They give one a preview of the actual computer based GRE test in which the answers have to be selected on the computer screens and not marked on paper.
Nearly all the websites that give practice for the verbal section exclusively have online flashcards that can be used by the candidates. One such website is rpipolymath.com (http://www.rpi-polymath.com/vocab.php). One can get a series of GRE vocabulary flashcards on this website that gives enough training for handling this section in the final test.
As the whole world today squeezes down to come into our mobile phones, the GRE vocabulary flashcards are also not left out. There are exclusive mobile applications designed for mobile phones, having downloaded which, one can experience mobile practice for the verbal section of GRE. One can carry multiple flashcards in one’s phone itself and practice wherever one wants to. The mobile application of GRE vocabulary flashcards is an innovation of the ultra-modern age and makes the whole ordeal of practicing for presumably, the largest section of GRE test, a lot easier. One can find the mobile application on- http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/1400.
The GRE vocabulary flashcards have been considered as the easiest and most efficient method of preparation when we talk about the verbal section of the test. The candidates spend hours together trying to memorise the long lists of words that are given in the preparation books. Even the verbal exercises that one takes for practice might not be that effective while preparing for this section due to its vastness. Flashcards are the method that can help one get into touch with the real pattern of the test and make one practice in that format only. Groups of candidates can get together and have quizzes using these flashcards, thus learning in a playful and enjoyable manner.
As is always said, it doesn’t matter how much preparation is done by the candidate but what matters is that how well one practices for the various sections of the test. GRE vocabulary flashcards are a method of practicing more and more and that is how one can get success in the test ultimately.
