The earlier pattern of GRE General Test, that was used before 1st August, 2011, had questions related to the knowledge of English vocabulary acquired by the test-takers. There were questions based on antonyms, analogies etc which required the test-taker to possess a remarkable vocabulary in English language. The test-takers were found memorizing long GRE vocab lists as they prepared for the old format of GRE General Test.
