GRE Testing Sites

WHERE ALL CAN YOU TAKE THE GRE

Taking the GRE

You must have heard time and again that taking the GRE is a must for securing admission to a desired graduate school. Though cliché, this is absolutely true. The reason for the importance accorded to the GRE is that your scores in the GRE are accepted by a large number of schools in the US and other countries of the world for admissions to the graduate programs being offered by them. Since there will be hundreds of applicants for a handful of seats for each graduate program, especially the reputed ones, it is important that you prepare well for taking the GRE and your aim should be to score as high as possible in the GRE.

The GRE is developed and administered by ETS. The official website of ETS, www.ets.org contains detailed information related to all aspects of taking the GRE. Obviously, you need to register for the GRE before you can take it. Consequently, you will need to choose the appropriate GRE testing site or centre when you register for the GRE.

Choosing the appropriate GRE Testing Sites

There are numerous GRE testing sites across the world. The number of GRE testing sites in the US and its territories is the highest as compared to any other country in the world as GRE scores are required for admission to a majority of colleges in these locations. GRE testing sites are available in many other countries of the world and so you can choose a GRE testing site depending upon your location. Keep the following mantras in mind while choosing the GRE testing site where you want to take the GRE.

Accessibility

It should be close to your location so that you do not spend a lot of time in travelling a day before you have to take the test. If at all you have to register for taking the test at a site which is far away from your location, reach the place a couple of days before the test date so that you are relaxed a day before the test and have time to recollect whatever you have been learning for the past months.

Availability

All the GRE testing sites are not available on all GRE testing dates. Therefore, before you register for taking the GRE on a particular date, confirm that the GRE testing site of your choice is available on that date. This information is readily available on the official website of GRE and is updated regularly. Make sure you are aware of the latest situation as far as the testing site of your choice is concerned because you would not like to waste money in requesting for a change in testing site at a later stage. You will be charged $50 for change of testing site!

Format Available

The computer-based GRE is not available at all GRE testing sites. The paper-based GRE is offered at the sites where the computer-based GRE is not available. The paper-based GRE is conducted only three times in a year whereas the computer-based GRE is conducted throughout the year. Therefore, choose the testing site accordingly.

Registration date

The seats at the GRE testing sites are limited and are allotted on a first come-first served basis. If you delay registering for the GRE, you may find that the GRE testing site of your choice is already full on the date on which you wish to take the GRE and that could be problematic. Since your GRE scores have to reach the graduate schools before the deadlines laid down by them, you will be forced to take the GRE at a test site that is far away from your location or you may have to take the GRE at an unsuitable date if you cannot afford to take the GRE at some other location. Therefore, register for the GRE well in time.

Information related to the GRE Testing Sites

As has been brought out before, all information pertaining to the GRE testing sites and their locations is available on the GRE official website. However, if you are not familiar with browsing the internet, some links have been given below for your convenience. You can go through these links to get detailed information about the testing sites in your location.

Your conduct at the GRE Testing site – trivial, yet important!

Make sure that you are well aware of your conduct at the GRE testing site on the test day. Non-compliance of the laid down rules and regulations could result in your registration being cancelled at the last moment and you will also have to forfeit your GRE registration fees. Details of what all is expected of you have been provided in the official website of GRE. For instance, you are not allowed to carry items like cell phones, photographic devices etc. into the testing site. Also, you have to provide a valid proof of identification before you can be permitted to take the test. Check the identification requirements from the official website or directly from the link, www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/test_day/id/. You cannot refute the fact that it is very important to gain information about the appropriate GRE testing sites, but it is equally important to be aware of your expected conduct on the test day.

The final word!

Do not forget that you must reach the GRE testing site well in time for the test. All your preparation and planning for the GRE will go in vain if you are not able to take the test for a trivial reason like not reaching the testing site in time. You must plan on reaching the testing site at least 30-40 minutes before the stipulated time. On the test day, you will be able to recall all that you have been studying for the past months only if you keep yourself cool and composed and sit for taking the test in a relaxed frame of mind!
