GRE Testing Materials

All That You Need to Know about the Types of GRE Test Preparation Materials

Available GRE Testing Materials:

To take a standardized international test like the GRE General Test, you need to have a high level of preparation. Your preparation level is mostly determined by the standard of GRE testing materials you use while studying for the test. As a result, it is important that you choose your study materials carefully. If you have already searched for GRE testing materials, you probably know that there are lots of sources that provide preparation materials for the GRE test, but it can be a difficult job for you to find one that meets your standards.

GRE - Good Gre Scores, Read GRE test experiences

The official GRE website is perhaps the most valuable resource for GRE preparation materials. GRE Powerprep software, also provided by the test-makers, is one of the most accurate tools for measuring your skills. There are lots of GRE study books and guides provided by renowned publishers. Additionally, there are many GRE preparation courses available that will provide you with an interactive classroom to prepare for the test with fellow students, guided by experienced instructors. So many options sometimes confuse the students as to how much preparation materials will do for them. Here we take a look at the available GRE testing materials to see how these can help you in getting higher GRE scores:

Start Your Preparation with Official Guides and Tools:

First of all, there are a number of GRE preparation resources available directly from the makers of the test. You can visit the ‘Prepare for the Test’ section of the official GRE website to find out the various study guides, sample questions and test taking tools that ETS offers free of cost. Here you will also find the details of each of the three test sections: what is being tested, how the scoring is done, etc. Moreover, you will also get sample questions for each of the sections of the test. This is very helpful as the revised version of the GRE test introduces many new question types which may confuse the test takers. Thus, an explanation from the test-makers themselves is a welcome option to the students.

You can also download the Powerprep software from the official GRE site, for free! If you are taking the computer based version of the test, there is no other alternative to this free tool. Even if you find some similar tools provided with paid study books or preparation courses, most of them fail to judge your skills as accurately as the free Powerprep software does. The software will let you take tests, review answers, and get scores in a way that is closest to the actual GRE test, so you can get an idea of the real test by utilizing this tool.

However, if you are taking the paper based GRE General Test, you need to download the Practice Book for the Paper-based GRE® revised General Test in PDF format. If you are concerned about the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE test, then there are a couple of guides to help you with Math Review and Math Conventions, which can also be downloaded in PDF format. The GRE website has a few paid tools and study resources, too. You can buy The Official Guide to the GRE® revised General Test — the official study book, as the name explains clearly. ETS now also provides the paid service called ScoreItNow!™ Online Writing Practice, which lets you measure your analytical writing skills.

Consider Buying GRE Study Books:

You need to have access to a computer to make use of most of the free GRE testing materials that you can find on the official GRE website. However, some students find it more comfortable to study with printed materials. In such cases, GRE study books can help you out. Of course, even if you have access to digital resources, a study book may seem indispensable while studying on your own. There are a number of GRE study books, other than The Official Guide to the GRE® revised General Test, that you can purchase. Most of the books come with additional resources in forms of CDs or DVDs. Some of the books give you limited access to online study materials, practice questions and tests, along with support from the authors or the publishers. As a result, it is not only the quality of the book that matters; you may also need to check what extra materials the book you buy provides you with.

Flashcards are such resources that may either come with the study book you buy, or you may need to purchase these separately. You can utilize flashcards to strengthen your vocabulary or to memorize difficult math equations. Some flashcards have a question printed on one side of the card, with the answer being on the opposite side. You can use such cards to revise before the test or to check how well-prepared you are. Flashcards can also be created easily; so if you are not satisfied with the ones available in the market — either for content or cost — you can build your own!

Classroom Courses are Useful, Too:

Most of the leading GRE books publishers hold GRE preparation courses both in classroom and online live formats. There are many other renowned institutions and experienced instructors who also provide GRE review classes. The classroom environment and the interactive sessions may seem more plausible to many students while preparing for the GRE test. Having access to such a course also enables you to resolve your personal problems and queries by consulting with the teachers. These review classes let you take a number of mock tests that help you in preparing for the actual test; so be careful to consider how many full-length practice tests the course provides you with. As most of the high quality courses are not available all around the world, the online version of such tests may be a good alternative. Some courses can also be availed in a one-on-one format, which you may consider if you prefer private teaching.

Choose the Ones That Best Suit Your Needs:

As you can see, there are many ways you can start preparing for the GRE test. However, each of the GRE testing materials comes with certain advantages and disadvantages. While some students may find the official guides and tools enough to start preparation with, others may need more advanced study materials. If some students find books to be the best study materials, some may prefer actual test preparation courses. Now that you have an idea of the available GRE testing materials and how they can help you in your preparation, choose the ones that best suit your personal needs. Your knowledge and skills may also determine what kinds of materials you may need and how long you will need to study before taking the test.
