GRE aspirants must plan not only for the test preparation but they should also plan their test timings. Selecting a test date of your choice depends upon the available GRE test times which are listed on the GRE official website and are updated regularly if any changes are made. When to appear for GRE

Choosing a specific date of your choice to appear for the GRE depends on both personal and administrative constraints.

Your scores will be mailed to you depending upon the choice of your test dates only. Hence depending upon your score report requirement, you must schedule your test. We shall discuss more about scores later.
There are two formats in which GRE is administered, computer based testing and paper based testing. Since, the computer based test is administered throughout the year except on holidays as specified by the official administrators; you can choose a convenient date from among the available ones. But the test takers attempting the GRE in paper based format must select only from those dates on which the paper based GRE is conducted. The paper based GRE is conducted up to three times a year. So, if you take a computer based test, you must keep in mind your test date and test centre availability and score reporting schedule before you schedule your test. If you are to take a paper based test, then you must carefully remember the GRE test times, registration deadlines and apply for the same.

How Many Attempts Can One Make?

As per the ruling for the conduct of GRE, candidates appearing for either the computer based testing or the paper based testing can take the GRE not more than once in two months. Also, within a period of one year, candidates appearing for either of the testing formats can appear for the GRE test not more than five times even if they wish to cancel their previously obtained scores.

GRE Score Reporting

Since the implementation of the revised GRE General Test, score reporting schedules have undergone a change with effect from August 1, 2011. Both computer based testing and paper based testing formats follow different score reporting schedules.

Computer Based Test Score Reporting

If you have attempted the GRE computer based test before August 1, 2011, then your scores will be mailed to you as well as the universities you mentioned within 10 to 15 days after your testing date.
From August 1, 2011, a new score reporting schedule has been introduced. For the GRE test times falling between August 1, 2011 and September 8, 2011, the scores will be reported by approximately November 8, 2011.
Test takers who take the test between September 9, 2011 and October 2, 2011 will get their scores by approximately November 10, 2011.
Similarly test takers who take the test between October 3, 2011 and October 15, 2011 will get their scores by approximately November 17, 2011. This way, test takers who set different GRE test times will receive their respective scores on different dates. Paper Based Testing Score Reporting

You will receive your scores within six weeks from the date on which you take the test. Generally the paper based GRE test is conducted in the months of February, October and November. For the academic year 2011-2012, the dates for the paper based test have been finalised and are in effect from August 1, 2011.

The candidates who take the test on October 22, 2011 will get their GRE scores by approximately December 2, 2011.
The candidates who take the test on November 19, 2011 will get their GRE scores by approximately December 30, 2011.
Similarly scores for the ones who attempt the paper based test on February 11, 2012 will be reported approximately by March 23, 2012.

How are GRE Scores Reported?

The GRE scores are reported by various means making it easier for the test takers. Your scores are reported cumulatively and are valid for 5 years.

You can know your GRE scores online free of cost only from the ‘My GRE account’ you create prior to your GRE testing. This service cannot be availed by the test takers who have not registered for the test online.

You will receive a score report by mail on the address you provide at the time of your registration. You can also view a sample score report at the link: www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/examinee_score_report.pdf.
You can even obtain the scores by phone once they are processed. For availing this service, you will be charged an amount of US $12. You can pay the stated amount using a credit/debit card. There is another service called ‘Additional Score reports (ASRs)’ in which additional score reports will be delivered to you by charging you a sum of US $23. More information regarding the ASRs can be found at the link: www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/scores/send#asr.

What Multiple GRE Scores Reflect?

Once you obtain a score against your test, it will stand valid for the next five years. If you have 2 or more valid scores within a five year span, then ETS sends all these scores to the universities designated by you. Then it’s up to the institutes how they use the GRE scores to determine your eligibility for admissions.

Usually, there is a misconception that no matter how many tests you take within a five year span, only your recent score counts for the admission process. This is not true. All your valid scores within the five year span will be scrutinised by the universities you apply for.
Two valid scores would be fine, but more than two scores will reflect a low profile on your part. It becomes worse if there is too much variation among your multiple scores.
Improved multiple scores might be of an advantage.
