The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a globally administered test by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for facilitation of students into the graduate programs at universities in countries like the US, UK, Canada and Australia. This exam is conducted worldwide and so has more than half a million people attempting it annually. This exam with such a large scope also requires to be carefully conducted and must cater to the needs of various applicants hailing from different countries. The GRE is conducted in two different modes, one is an online computer based test and the other a paper based test. The paper based test is normally conducted in countries where there will not be access to sophisticated computer facilities.

How important is the timely GRE Test Registration?

Timely GRE test registration is as important as preparation for the exam. It too requires careful planning. The crucial part is the selection of dates. You have to select dates which are feasible to you and must take some time off if you are working, before the examination. This will help you keep focused. GRE can be taken on any working day throughout the year except for Sundays and Saturdays. They remain holidays. There might also be some holidays in view of local demands. You will have to be careful in selecting an appropriate date so that there would be no hindrance for you in taking the exam. The last month of preparation before your test date would be much more important than the whole journey. All this period, you must concentrate on revising the whole syllabus along with taking good tests to make yourself confident enough. Usually during the period between the months of October and February, there will be more students appearing for the exam. So, in order for you to take the test in this period, you will have to book for the test way before your choice of date because only then can you get a number of date choices. Leave considerable time for your preparation before the choice of your test date.

GRE test registration is made simple and accessible to all the applicants worldwide. You can get a ‘GRE Information Bulletin’ for free from the ETS. After obtaining it, go through the whole Information Bulletin to know all the information in regards to the GRE test registration. The most basic requirement for anyone to attempt GRE is a passport. The fee for GRE is different in various countries. It ranges from US$140-US$210 depending upon the country. GRE test registration could be made in following four different modes for the online test format. They are:

Online GRE Test Registration

One can register online at www.ets.org/gre. It is the official GRE website run by the GRE test administrators. You will have to register yourself in this website. For this, click on ‘Register Online’. Then you will be redirected to a page where you can create a new account by entering details. Make sure that the details you enter must be genuine, in sense they should match with the details present on your identity documents. If there will be any mismatch of these details during the exam or during the admission procedure, your candidature will be cancelled and you will lose your dream. So, be sure of entering the correct details. After you enter all your details and submit, there will be a new account created for you. From this account, you can register for the GRE exam online by paying the stated fee amount. The payment modes they accept are via a credit/debit card, an E-Check drawn against US bank accounts only and PayPal Services. You will have to read all the terms and policies before accepting them. Once, you will be confirmed about your application by them, there can be no changes made then on. This GRE test registration mode cannot be availed by Nigerian nationalists.

Once you have paid the fee, you will be given a choice to select the date of your choice. Since the date selection is on first come, first served basis, you will have to select an appropriate date from the provided ones. The test centre would also be your choice which you must select the one very nearest to you.

GRE Test Registration on Phone

On phone, one can register for GRE by calling the respective Regional Registration Centre (RRC). There are a total of 14 Regional Registration Centres (RRCs). The cash is not accepted. You can only pay by Credit or Debit card. Once you have successfully registered, you will be sent a confirmation in the form of a number, the test centre details and the time of exam.

GRE Test Registration via Fax

For registration through fax, ‘International Test Scheduling Form’ in a pdf format which is available in the information bulletin needs to be filled and faxed to the respective RRC which is governing the region of your stay. The payment as in above also applies here. All the confirmation details will be faxed to you once are successfully registered.

GRE Test Registration via Mail

GRE test registration via mail follow the same procedure as it is done through the fax but here, you will mail the duly filled form rather than faxing it. You will receive the test centre details, your confirmation number

In any of the above methods, either through fax or mail, if you do not receive any confirmation by them, you will have to notify them on the same at least before three working days of your first choice test date. Otherwise, you will not be refunded.

Paper Based Test Registration Procedures

The paper based test is conducted in countries where there is no possibility for an online test. The paper based test in such countries is conducted three times a year in the months of October, November and February. GRE test registrations for this test format are carried out as follows:

Paper Based Test Registration by Web

It follows the same procedure as followed for the online GRE test registration.

Paper Based Test Registration by Mail

You need to download and fill the registration form in the pdf format which can be found in the GRE Bulletin and mail the filled up form with payment as mentioned to the address which is already printed on the form. Your mail must be received before the registration deadline stated by the ETS. You need to wait for a month or so for it to be processed and will then receive the confirmation and the rest details. These forms cannot be sent by any other means.

These are all the details pertaining to the GRE test registration which needs to be carefully followed during the time of your registration. You must not be in a hurry to do this. Think over and choose your dates precisely. Some applicants start preparation only after registering leaving a good 3-4 month period prior to their test date. This is also good if you are confident enough. From August of this month GRE is being revised and so, in view of new test pattern an offer of 50% on the existing fee is valid for the registrations between August 1 and September 30, 2011. Avail it if you are already prepared for the exam or else take it later for it will not be the fee that will matter but your preparation is all that matters for your success!
