GRE Schedule 2011-2012

What is the Revised GRE Schedule for 2011-2012

Know the Test You Need to Take:

The GRE test, one of the standardized tests organized by ETS, has been thoroughly revised recently, and the revised version of the GRE test is being offered from August 2011. You need to decide which version of the test you want to take, and in which format, before bothering about the GRE schedule 2011-2012. There are two tests actually; the GRE General Test is the one most students take, and it is also the one that most of the colleges or universities will take into account. However, there is also the GRE Subject Test that you can consider taking, if you have special knowledge in any specific field of study and want that knowledge to get counted by the admission authorities. Moreover, some institutions may require you to have special skills over one subject; in that case also the GRE Subject Test will help you. The GRE General Test evaluates the students on their skills for verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing; while the Subject Test is offered by ETS for eight different subjects, which you can check on the official GRE website.

GRE Schedule 2011-2012 Differs According to the Version of the Test You Take:

The GRE schedule 2011-2012 is different for the GRE General Test and the GRE Subject Test. The revised GRE General Test is offered all year round in most places around the world. However, it is the computer based test that is available in most countries; if the computer based version of the GRE test is not available in your locality, you must take the paper based version of the test. The paper based version of the GRE General Test is offered up to three times in one calendar year. On the other hand, the GRE Subject Test is offered only in the paper based format. It is offered only a few times in one year, and a student can take the Subject Test as often as it is organized. For the GRE General Test, a student is limited to take the test only once within two months, and five times in one calendar year.

Where to Take the GRE Test:

As the computer based revised GRE General Test is offered all over the world, you would probably want to take this version of the test. If you are taking the computer based GRE test, you have less to worry about the GRE schedule 2011-2012 as you can take the test whenever you want as long as you get a vacant seat at the nearest test center. You can get the list of GRE test centers from the official GRE site. The GRE test is offered all over the world through Prometric test centers. Prometric is a US based company, presently acquired by ETS, which helps many organizations in administering technology-enabled tests. The revised version of the GRE General Test can be taken at about 700 GRE test centers in over 160 countries. To make sure that you get a test appointment scheduled on a desired date, register for the test as early as possible. Also, once you choose a test date, you may need to make sure that your nearest test center will remain open for that date, as all the test centers may not be available on all dates.

Registering for the GRE Test:

There are quite a few options for registering for the GRE test. If you are registering for the computer based GRE General Test, you can register online through the GRE website, or you can register by phone or via mail. If you are from outside the US, you have an additional option for registering through fax. For the paper based GRE General Test or the GRE Subject Test you need to register either online or through mail. The other options are not available in this case.

Online Registration Is Quick and Easy:

Registering online, however, is the easiest option you have to register for the GRE test. You need to have a computer with internet access, and a credit or debit card to be able to register for the test. As the first step, you need to create a My GRE account. You can create one by visiting the official GRE site. A My GRE account not only lets you register for the test, it also enables you to view your scores online. On the GRE site, you will also find the list of test centers where you can take the test. Before choosing a test center near you, you need to select either the computer based or the paper based version of the GRE test depending on your location. Once you select a test center, you have to specify a test date or a time period within which you intend to take the GRE test. You will be shown the available test dates and times accordingly. Choose a date from the available test dates and you are ready to register! You need to provide your personal information and select your payment option to complete the online registration process.

Other Registration Options:

To register through mail, you need to send your application form at least three weeks before the first desired test date. In case of registering through fax, you need to send the form at least one week before the desired test date. You can also contact the nearest test center directly. However, the test center may try to avoid processing a test appointment. In that case, you can call Prometric Regional Registration Center to schedule a test date. Though the online registration is the fastest option for registering for the GRE test, it is unavailable in certain cases; for example, for students with disabilities, students availing ETS fee reduction certificates, students registering for Monday testing or standby testing, and for students from Nigeria.

GRE Score Reporting Schedule:

While considering the GRE schedule 2011-2012, you need to keep in mind GRE score reporting schedule, too. With the introduction of the revised version of the GRE test in August 2011, there have been some changes to the score reporting schedule also. Usually, the students can expect their score reports within 10-15 days of taking the test. However, the scores of the revised GRE test will not be available before mid-November. From December this year, the score reporting cycle will resume to normal. As you can see, you must learn first when you might need your score reports to be able to fix a test date accordingly.

Get Prepared for the Test:

Once you have learnt about the GRE schedule 2011-2012 and fixed a test appointment according to your available options, it is time to start your final test preparation. Actually, you need to schedule your test appointment taking into account how much time you may need to prepare for the test. If you do not know already, the GRE site provides many useful test preparation materials and tools that you can utilize while preparing for the test. Also, be sure to check the official GRE site for updated information about the test before you finally register for the test.
