GRE is one among the many standardized tests which is emphasized upon by the different schools in U.S. and other English speaking countries for entry into their business and graduate programs. GRE test is not based on testing any subject specific knowledge but yes, it does test your higher cognitive and writing skills which you have acquired as a student over a number of years. It basically tests these skills through three sections on the test namely Verbal Reasoning Measure, Quantitative Reasoning Measure and Analytical Writing Tasks. While all the three sections have to be given equal emphasis while studying, this article focuses specifically on how to prepare for the math section of GRE.

The Math Review of GRE is in the pdf format that is available on the ETS website and identifies the requirement of the exam; hence it has compiled a comprehensive list of materials which includes definitions, properties, examples as well as a set of exercises with answers at the end of each review section. Your Math Review is not intended to be all inclusive however; it will familiarize you with the mathematical skills and concepts that are imperative to understand in order to solve problems and reason quantitatively in the quantitative reasoning measure of the GRE Revised General Test

Before we get to ‘know it all about GRE Math Review’ let us give you a brief outlook on the Quantitative Reasoning Measure of the Revised General Test.

**Number of Questions**- If you are attempting the *computer based revised GRE test* then the quantitative reasoning measure will consist of ,*two sections* to be answered in *thirty five minutes each*. Each section will have approximately twenty questions. If you are answering the *paper based revised GRE test* then the quantitative reasoning measure will consist of *two sections* to be answered in *forty minutes each*. Each section will have approximately *twenty five questions*.

**Types of Questions**- You will have four types of questions in the Quantitative section

** Quantitative Comparison**- Here you will have to make a comparison between two quantities.

** Multiple Choice - Select One-** Here you will have to select one answer choice from a list of five answer choices.

** Multiple –Choice –Select One or More-** Here you will have to select more than one answer choice from a list of choices.

** Numeric Entry-** In these types of questions you will be
asked to enter your answer as an integer or as a decimal in a single
answer box or as a fraction in two separate boxes.

** Data Interpretation Sets-** Sometimes you may be given a
table, graph or a data presentation wherein you will have to interpret
or analyze the given data. These types of questions may be multiple
choice (both types) or numeric entry.

** Content of the Questions**- The quantitative reasoning
measure assesses your basic mathematical skills, your understanding of
elementary mathematical concepts and your ability to reason
quantitatively, to model and solve problems with quantitative methods
which will be assessed through four content areas – Algebra,
Arithmetic, Geometry and Data analysis

You can get comprehensive information about the content of Quantitative Reasoning Measure in the Math Review.

In this review you will have topics from four content areas namely Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Data Analysis. Besides having accessible electronic format (Word) edition of the Algebra Chapter of the Math Review, you can also download versions of large print (PDF) and accessible electronic format (Word) of each of the four chapters of the review. You can also take a large Print Figure supplement for each chapter from the GRE website.

You can access the tactile figure supplement for the four chapters of the review, along with additional accessible practice and test familiarization materials in other formats from ETS Disability Services from Monday to Friday 8:30a.m. - 5p.m. New York time, call at 1-609-771-7780, or 1-866-387-8602 (toll free for test takers in the United States, US territories and Canada), or via email at stassd@ets.org.

In Math Review you will find mathematical equations, expressions and figures. In accessible electronic format (Word) editions, each figure is described by a text which you can skip if you wish to. Similarly, there are mathematical equations and expressions which are accessible as graphic presentation as well as verbal presentation. You can choose any of these presentations to review the given topics.

** ETS GRE Math Review- Arithmetic**: The Arithmetic portion
covers topics such as integers, fractions and decimals and progresses
to the set of real numbers. The basic arithmetic operations of
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are discussed along
with exponents and roots. At the end of the section you will learn the
concepts of ratio and percent. At the end of the section you will have
arithmetic exercises for practice.

** ETS GRE Math Review- Algebra**: Your topics on Algebra part
will review the various algebraic tools and their applications to real
world problems. At the end of the section you will analyze coordinate
geometry and graphs of functions as other important tools for solving
problems. The algebraic exercises at the end will help you fortify your
concepts.

** ETS GRE Math Review-Geometry:** The Math Review of
Geometry begins with lines, angles, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals,
other polygons, congruent and other similar figures.

At the end of the topic you will have geometry exercises for practice.

** ETS GRE Math Review-Data Analysis:** In the Data Analysis section
you will be made to understand how data is used to describe past and
present trends and thus predict future trends to make decisions. These
concepts will be developed through topics of basic descriptive
statistics, interpretation of data in tables, graphs and frequency
distributions and probability.

**Some other good sites which can help you prepare for the math section are:**

www.ets.org/media/tests/GRE/pdf/math.pdf- This practice book contains a GRE mathematics test, besides the test taking strategies, instructions and answering procedures.

www.gremathformulas.com With its meticulously compiled list of formulas, strategies and tips this site gives a bird’s eye view of math that is tested in GRE. It covers formulas from all four content areas making your study very effective.

www.800score.com- It does a comprehensive Math review on all the subjects of the test. There are ample practice exercises to give you sufficient practice.

If you have been out of touch with math for a long time, you need not get upset since, most of the content is what you have learnt during your school years. The good news is you will not be tested on calculus, trigonometry, inferential statistics, and ability to construct proofs or any other higher level mathematics.
