GRE Exam Registration

Means of GRE Exam Registration

Every student dreams of getting education in topmost foreign colleges and universities. It is certainly a matter of pride when one has the name of a prestigious educational institute in the resume. With most of the colleges and universities giving recognition to GRE scholars, the GRE test can be considered as a ladder that helps a person in achieving this dream of theirs and the first step of this ladder is getting registered for the test. One should remember that GRE exam registration does not simply refer to filling the form for taking the test but it involves various other factors that have to be considered well in advance.

First and foremost, one should be aware of the multiple methods through which one can register for GRE.

  • ONLINE REGISTRATION-
  • Online GRE exam registration is the most convenient of all the available methods. There are no time constraints when one registers online as the facility is available 24x7. However, one should remember that registration can be done only on the official website and it has to be done at least one week before the test date. If the registration is done after that, then the test-taker will be charged late fee.

  • REGISTERING VIA PHONE OR FAX-
  • Registration via phone or fax is not difficult but is not as user-friendly as the online method. The prime limitation is that of time since one can register via phone or fax in the working hours only. The phone or fax registration has to be done at least a week before the test date.

  • REGISTERING THROUGH MAIL-
  • Getting the registration done through mail is a time consuming process, so one should mail the registration form at least four weeks before the test date. Once the form is received by the authorities, they mail back to confirm the student’s registration. The form can be downloaded from the official website along with the authorisation request form that is needed when one wants to register via mail.

The GRE exam registration involves declaration of a few particulars related to the student and the student’s preferences for taking the test. They are-

  • Information about the student
  • The exam centre chosen
  • The exam format preference
  • The preferred exam date
  • The fee payment
  • The list of the colleges to which the test resultsshould be forwarded

Though this seems to be a small list of details that is needed to be provided to ETS before the test, there is a great amount of thinking and decision making involved in the process. There are many big and small factors that have to be considered when one decides about all these details and puts the information on the GRE exam registration form.

  • One should be careful while providing personal details. The particulars should match with those on the identity proof attached with the form. One should remember that in case the particulars provided initially, are not correct, and one tries to get them corrected later, there is an additional fee of US$50 charged for it and it involves a lot of effort on the test-taker’s part. It is thus better to be careful about it in the beginning itself.
  • The GRE exam registration should be done after selecting a GRE centre that can be approached easily. Also, information should be gathered about the test formats that are supported by the selected GRE centre. In case, the selected exam centre doesn’t support one format of the test, the student has to either settle for the other option or select another exam centre. The information about various GRE exam centres can be obtained from the official GRE website (www.ets.org).
  • The fee for GRE ranges between US$140 to US$175 varying from country to country. Students can check their fee amount on the official GRE website. The payment can be made either through credit card, debit card or cheque.
  • One should check for the fee waivers and other redemption schemes that are designed by ETS for the benefit of the students. To get information about the various offers one should check the official GRE site before registering for the test and making the payment of the fees.
  • Information about the various colleges and institutions that give weightage to GRE scores in the admission process is very crucial and has to be collected before GRE exam registration. You will have to mention the names of the graduation colleges to which you want the scores to be sent directly. ETS gives the facility of sending the scores directly to four colleges free of cost. In case, one wants to have the scores sent to more number of colleges, it can be done after paying an additional cost for it. In case, you have not finalized the names of the colleges, they can be communicated to the testing authorities later as well.
  • The time when one wants to take the test is very important. The best time to take the test is before seeking admission in a graduation course so that the scores are ready to be shown at the time of admission. Most students take the test in the months of October or December.
  • Though one can go in for GRE exam registration till one week before the test date, but one should register well in advance so that there is enough time for preparation. As soon as the registration process is complete, official preparation material is handed over to the student using which one can start preparing instantly and can opt for other preparation methods later.
  • Registering early ensures the chance of getting a seat in the selected exam centre. There are a limited number of seats available at the GRE exam centres. So it is better to have an early GRE exam registration.

The GRE exam registration process is a formal procedure that has its own strains and pressures when one’s future depends on it. So, it is always better to finish off the registration formalities well before the test date, so that the rest of the time can be devoted entirely to test preparation and one can be free from the paper work worries. If all the mentioned points are kept in mind, one can be sure that the registration process will become simple and less tiring; thus, one can have ample time to prepare, practice and give one’s best in the test.
