GRE Testing Center
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test, conducted every year by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). GRE is a basic aptitude test which is unbiased in its selection of prospective candidates; hence it is considered mandatory to be eligible for admissions to higher educational programs in a large number of schools and colleges across U.S. and other English speaking countries. Test takers who take the GRE before August 1, 2011 will take the GRE test in the old version but from August 1 onwards test takers selecting the GRE dates 2011-2012 will take the revised GRE General Test.
GRE can be taken in two ways:
There are two forms of the GRE: The GRE General Test and the GRE Subject Tests. The GRE General Test is the test whose scores will be required by colleges which consider taking the GRE as one of the criteria for admissions. The GRE Subject Tests are optional and you may or may not take a particular GRE Subject Test depending upon the requirements of the college which you wish to join. For more information on the GRE dates 2011-2012 for GRE Subject Tests log onto www.ets.org/gre/subject/testdates.
The computer-based GRE revised General Test is conducted throughout the year. Before deciding on GRE dates in 2011-2012 you should check out the score reporting schedule. This is important if you want your scores to reach your prospective schools before they close their deadlines for submission of applications for their graduate or business programs. You can check the admission deadlines of your prospective schools from their websites. Your scores are generally reported within 10-15 days after the GRE test date; so select your GRE dates 2011-2012 wisely as selecting the wrong date can affect your chances of admission for that particular year. Given below are the test dates for 2011-2012.
| Computer- based GRE Dates 2011-2012 | Approximate Score Reporting GRE Dates 2011-2012 |
|---|---|
| August 1-September 8, 2011 | November 8, 2011 |
| September 9–October 2, 2011 | November 10, 2011 |
| October 3–October 15, 2011 | November 17, 2011 |
| October 16-November 18, 2011 | December 1, 2011 |
| November 19-November 28, 2011 | December 8, 2011 |
| November 29, 2011 or later | 10-15 days after the test date |
When you take the computer-based GRE revised General Test you have the advantage of immediately viewing your scores online. This gives you a better idea of your performance. If you have underperformed, you can always cancel your scores or select a fresh GRE date 2011-2012.
Selection of GRE Test Date, August–November 2011: If you have selected your GRE test date between August 1, 2011 and November 30, 2011, then your unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores will not be available for viewing on the new score scale at the test center; instead, you will be able to view your scores based on the previous score scale of 200- 800.
Selection of GRE Test Date, December, 2011 or later: If you have selected your GRE test date in December or any time later than that, then you will be able to view your unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores on the new score scale of 130-170 in one point increments. However, you will not be able to view your Analytical Writing scores at the time of taking the test because of the essay scoring process.
You will not be given any printed copies of your unofficial score report. Though the computer-based GRE test is conducted throughout the year, you cannot take the computer-based GRE test more than five times in a year.
The paper-based revised GRE test is only available at those places where computer-based testing is not possible. You should check out the list of computer-based testing locations before you fill your application. If computer-based testing is available in your location, then you will be registered for the revised computer-based GRE test. The paper-based test will have the test design and question types, modified appropriately in a linear test form. You cannot exchange the testing fees and registrations between the paper-based tests and the computer-based tests. The GRE dates 2011-2012 for the paper-based revised GRE test will begin from October, 2011. The paper-based GRE test is conducted three times in a year and unlike the computer-based GRE test you can attempt this test any number of times. Your score reports will be mailed approximately after six weeks from the selected GRE test date.
