What are the GRE Costs for Different Candidates?

The Graduate Record Examination conducted by the Educational Testing Service is attempted by scores of students who wish to pursue graduate studies in U.S and other English speaking countries like U.K. and Canada. When applying to the various universities; besides, the GPA, the recommendation letters and work experience, it is the scores of GRE General Test which most universities will consider for admission purposes. There are also GRE Subject Tests, which are optional. The requirement of the scores of GRE Subject Tests can vary depending on the universities and it can also depend on the requirements of the different departments within the same university. How do you take GRE General Test?

The GRE General Test is an online test which was previously a computer adaptive test (CAT), but from August 1, 2011 this test has been revised to a computer-based test (CBT). The computer-based test, unlike the computer adaptive test, gives you the freedom to review your answers within the same section of the test. In certain areas where the computer-based test is not available, the GRE General Test is conducted as a paper-based test. Before registering for the GRE General Test check the official website, for computer-based testing in your area.

After you have decided on your test date make sure that you register as soon as possible as the appointments are on first come first served basis due to the limited number of seats available at each test centre.

GRE Costs for Different Candidates:

The GRE costs for registering for the GRE General Test can vary for different candidates according to the location and also according to the testing date. Beginning from August 1, 2011 the GRE General Test has been revised to a new format. ETS is giving a 50% discount on the test fees for those who are taking the GRE in the new format between August 1 and September 30, 2011. The GRE costs during this period, for students from United States, U.S. Territories and Puerto Rico will be US$80 and for students who are testing from all other places of the world, the GRE costs will be US$95 , provided you take the test anytime between August 1, 2011 and September 30, 2011.

The GRE costs for those students who take the test after September 30, 2011, will be as follows:

United States, U.S. Territories and Puerto Rico- US$160

Other places of the world- US$190

You can make the payment for the computer-based GRE General Test online, by phone or by mail. GRE test takers testing from Mainland China, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong can only register online at www.ets.org/mygre.

For those who are taking the paper-based GRE General Test, payments can be made online or by mail. If you register after the given deadline then the GRE costs will go up by an additional fee of US$25.

Fee Reduction Certificate:

If you are a college senior or a student who is not enrolled in any college, but you meet the eligibility requirements of the ETS, then you might be entitled to a Fee Reduction Certificate which allows you a 50% discount on your test fee. However, this Fee Reduction Program can be used only once thereafter, you will be charged for all the additional tests you take.

GRE Cost for Standby Testing:

If you are taking the GRE paper-based test and if there is sufficient space, test materials and staff available at the test centre, then you might be able to take Standby Testing. The GRE costs for Standby Testing will include an additional fee of US$50 along with your regular fee.

This facility is, however, not available for non standard testing, for those testing in India, Mainland China, Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong; and Monday testers. If you are taking the Standby Testing, then you should report to the test centre by 8:15 a.m. with your completed registration form, payment and photo identification card.

GRE Cost for Change of Test Centre or Change of Subject Test Date:

In case you want to change your test centre or the date for the GRE Subject Test, then you can either contact the GRE services before the registration deadline or visit www.ets.org/gre/revised/general/testdates or www.ets.org/gre/subject/testdates. The GRE costs will amount to an additional charge of US$50. You can report to the test centre of your choice on the day of the test with your original admission ticket. If the test you need is available and the centre can accommodate you, then there will be no additional charge and you will be given preference over the Standby Testers since you have already registered. The Standby Testers present at the test centre for on the spot registration will be given second preference.

GRE Cost for Rescheduling your Test:

If you want to reschedule your test, you can do so within the same year; however, you should contact the GRE services at least three days before your test date. This does not include the test date or the day of your request. The GRE costs for rescheduling your test will amount to an additional charge of US$50.

GRE Cost for Cancelling your Test:

If you wish to cancel your registration for the revised GRE General test or the GRE Subject Test, then you should do so at least three days in advance not counting the day of your test and the day of your request. You will then receive half of the test fees as your refund and the other half of your test fees will be used to cover expenses incurred during the registration process. There will be no cash refunds and the payment will be done in U.S. dollars.

Note: If you have not followed proper registration procedures or have not provided proper identification at the test centre, you will forfeit your refund. If you are taking the paper-based test, then you will be refunded only after the score reporting date.

No refund for cancellation will be given to those who are taking the computer-based GRE revised General Test during the discount period of August and September, 2011.

Do Not Forget!

All GRE costs are stated in U.S. dollars.
Make sure you follow the proper procedures for payment. Do not send your payment in cash.
If you are paying by check, then it must be drawn on a bank in U.S. or Canada. If you are paying in some other currency then the check should be drawn on banks of the same country as the currency for e.g. if you are paying in Indian rupees then the check should be drawn on banks in India.
You should have sufficient budget in your account or you may end up paying an additional service fee of US$20 which will be debited electronically from your account.
If you do not pay the correct GRE costs then you won’t be registered for the test.
You should include the tax amount where it is applicable.

Once you have made the necessary payment make sure you arrive at the test centre on time. If you are absent for the test then you will not be refunded your test fees and even the institutions where your scores are to be sent, will not be informed of your absence.
