The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is administered in two formats by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in order to help students to get admitted into universities in various countries like the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia etc. The two formats in which the test is administered are computer based GRE and paper based GRE. ETS has introduced the revised GRE General Test with effect from August 1, 2011. ETS has announced that this revision of the GRE test has been a major attempt in updating the test format in the past 60 years. GRE Registration Costs In 2011

The fee for GRE General Test for test takers who appeared for the exam before August 1, 2011 was between US $130 and US $210.

The variations in the fee structure depended upon the location of the test taker.
Different test takers hailing from different countries were charged differently.
The candidates appearing from the US, its territories and Puerto Rico were charged with a fee of US $150 and the test takers from China, Hong Kong were charged with a fee of US $205. Likewise, candidates appearing from different countries were charged differently.

GRE Revised General Test

The revised GRE General Test comes with more advanced features as compared to that of the earlier test format. It has many test taker friendly features. The question pattern is being changed with real life situational questions replacing the older ones. On the whole, the revised GRE test has been made more interesting as compared to the older GRE General Test.

GRE Revised Test Costs between August and September 2011

ETS announced a savings of 50% on the GRE exam fee for test takers who have scheduled their test date between August 1, 2011 and September 30, 2011 as an introductory offer.
The test takers taking the GRE during the above mentioned period hailing from the US, its territories and Puerto Rico will be charged with an amount of US $80 as the registration fee.
Test takers who are taking the GRE during the above mentioned period and are hailing from countries other than US, its territories and Puerto Rico will be charged with a GRE exam fee amounting to US $95.
This offer of 50% saving is valid only if you schedule your exam during the above mentioned period.

Revised GRE Test Costs in 2011-2012 with effect from August 1, 2011

By GRE cost 2011-2012, we are referring to the exam fee for the candidates appearing only after September 2011.

The GRE cost 2011-2012 for test takers hailing from any country other than US, its territories and Puerto Rico is US $160.
The exam fee for candidates appearing for the exam after September 2011 from the US, its territories and Puerto Rico is US $ 140.
The paper based revised test also costs the same as mentioned above.

The paper based test is administered only in those countries where there are no adequate facilities for conducting a computer based test. It is conducted three times in a year; usually in the months of February, October and November.

Paid Request Services

GRE also handles some requests by the test takers for which they charge a fee.

Once you cross the registration deadline for the paper based test, you will have to register for the exam by paying a late registration fee of US $25.
Once you have missed even the late registration deadline, you can go for standby testing with an extra fee of US $50.
You can reschedule your test date for the computer based test by paying a fee of US $50.
You can also request for a change in your test centre depending upon the availability by paying a fee of US $50.

GRE Subject Test 2011-2012 Fee

The GRE Subject Tests are conducted three times a year worldwide. They are usually conducted in the months of October, November and April.
A GRE Subject Test costs US $140 for test takers from the US, its territories and Puerto Rico.
It costs US $160 for all test takers appearing in locations other than the above mentioned places.

Payment Options

Online payment

The GRE exam fee can be paid online from the official GRE website.
You must first register online with the official GRE website by creating your own ‘My GRE Account’ which is free.
From your account, you can pay the fees, schedule your test and choose your test centre.
You cannot pay the stated fee amounts by cash.
You can only pay by a credit/debit card or a certified check.
You will be communicated with on your e-mail for any other clarifications.
