Argument:
The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.

"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

Essay
The writer of the above letter to the editor mentions a concern regarding the protection of environment. The writer says that the current members are not putting in efforts to protect our environment. Thus, members like Frank Braun of Clearview town council should be voted out. The writer also appeals to the residents of Clearview that they should vote for Ann Green in the next mayoral elections. This would ensure that the environmental pollution is checked and healthy environment is protected.

According to the writer, the policies of the current members have ignored the environmental concerns and have added to the rising pollution levels. This is done due to a double fold increase in the number of factories that have opened in Clearview in the past year. This rise in air pollution level has taken its toll on the health of the residents, as there has been a 25 percent increase in the respiratory illnesses amongst people as reported by the local hospital. Thus, there is a need of change of members in the next elections by which people could elect more responsible and environmentally concerned leaders.

The writer suggests that the residents should elect Ann Green, a member of the Good Earth Coalition, who would be the right person to check these problems and save our environment. Thus, he assumes that Ann Green would help in formulating such policies that would not result in such large amounts of air pollution. It would be thus seen that the menace of pollution is checked and good health is ensured.

In making such suggestions, the writer of the letter to the editor ignores some issues. It may be likely that a change of the leadership results in checking air pollution, but this result is not guaranteed. Promises made at the time of elections are not always fulfilled after coming into power. Thus, it is likely that Ann Green of the Green Coalition does not abide by her words and deceives the trust of the Clearview residents. Moreover in a Coalition there is pressure from other parties as well, which can force a member to formulate policies chosen by the majority. In such a case, it is possible that when Ann Green comes in power, more stress is laid on other issues like development and education rather than pollution.

The writer also does not take into consideration other factors that contribute to the rising pollution. The residents of Clearview are also largely responsible for the rise in air pollution levels. The use of motor cars emitting harmful fumes, deforestation and lack of tree plantation are also major factors responsible for the air pollution. Considering that generally the factories are set up far from the city, it cannot be considered to affect city pollution as much as other factors could probably. There has been an increase in the vehicle density in the city. More vehicles mean more air pollution. This aspect of air pollution is ignored by the writer in the above argument.

Another point that is carelessly taken by the writer is that the number of patients reported in the local hospital may not be a correct representation of the general health of the residents of the city. There are other hospitals which are preferred by many patients. Thus, a report of all such hospitals would correctly indicate the percentage increase in the number of patients being treated for respiratory illnesses.

Thus, the argument made by the writer of the letter to the editor has not kept in mind many issues which could lead to air pollution. In this respect his suggestion of electing Ann Green in the next mayoral elections could not be as effective as the writer thinks. Thus, it can be understood that the argument does not present a completely reliable solution for checking the rising air pollution.
