Argument:
The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.

“In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote forAnn Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than forFrank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because thecurrent members are not protecting our environment. For example, duringthe past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, airpollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect AnnGreen, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly besolved.”

Essay
The writer of the above letter to theeditor mentions a concern regarding the protection of environment. Thewriter says that the current members are not putting in efforts toprotect our environment. Thus, members like Frank Braun of Clearviewtown council should be voted out. The writer also appeals to theresidents of Clearview that they should vote for Ann Green in the nextmayoral elections. This would ensure that the environmental pollutionis checked and healthy environment is protected.

According to the writer, the policies of the current members haveignored the environmental concerns and have added to the risingpollution levels. This is done due to a double fold increase in thenumber of factories that have opened in Clearview in the past year. This rise in air pollution level has taken its toll on the health ofthe residents, as there has been a 25 percent increase in therespiratory illnesses amongst people as reported by the local hospital. Thus, there is a need of change of members in the next elections bywhich people could elect more responsible and environmentally concernedleaders.

The writer suggests that the residents should elect Ann Green, a memberof the Good Earth Coalition, who would be the right person to checkthese problems and save our environment. Thus, he assumes that AnnGreen would help in formulating such policies that would not result insuch large amounts of air pollution. It would be thus seen that themenace of pollution is checked and good health is ensured.

In making such suggestions, the writer of the letter to the editorignores some issues. It may be likely that a change of the leadershipresults in checking air pollution, but this result is not guaranteed.Promises made at the time of elections are not always fulfilled aftercoming into power. Thus, it is likely that Ann Green of the GreenCoalition does not abide by her words and deceives the trust of theClearview residents. Moreover in a Coalition there is pressure fromother parties as well, which can force a member to formulate policieschosen by the majority. In such a case, it is possible that when AnnGreen comes in power, more stress is laid on other issues likedevelopment and education rather than pollution.

The writer also does not take into consideration other factors thatcontribute to the rising pollution. The residents of Clearview are alsolargely responsible for the rise in air pollution levels. The use ofmotor cars emitting harmful fumes, deforestation and lack of treeplantation are also major factors responsible for the air pollution.Considering that generally the factories are set up far from the city,it cannot be considered to affect city pollution as much as otherfactors could probably. There has been an increase in the vehicledensity in the city. More vehicles mean more air pollution. This aspectof air pollution is ignored by the writer in the above argument.

Another point that is carelessly taken by the writer is that the numberof patients reported in the local hospital may not be a correctrepresentation of the general health of the residents of the city. There are other hospitals which are preferred by many patients. Thus, areport of all such hospitals would correctly indicate the percentageincrease in the number of patients being treated for respiratoryillnesses.

Thus, the argument made by the writer of the letter to the editor hasnot kept in mind many issues which could lead to air pollution. In thisrespect his suggestion of electing Ann Green in the next mayoralelections could not be as effective as the writer thinks. Thus, it canbe understood that the argument does not present a completely reliablesolution for checking the rising air pollution.
