Explanations

1. ABHORRENCE means disgust. ANIMOSITY means hatred and ANATHEMA refers to a feeling of utter loathing or disgust. Hence, they convey the same meaning as ANATHEMA and therefore they are both incorrect. ARTICULATE refers to the process of uttering clearly in distinct syllables and therefore, it can by no means be termed as an antonym of ABHORRENCE. In the view of the above, it can be seen that AFFECTION is the correct answer as it means fond attachment or love which is an antonym of ABHORRENCE.

2. COMELY is used to refer to someone who is pleasing in appearance and has an attractive face. BRUSQUE is used to refer to an action that is carried out in an abrupt or blunt manner. GORGEOUS is used to describe something that is splendid in appearance. CANDID means honest. GROTESQUE is used to describe an ugly person or thing. Hence, GROTESQUE stands out as the correct answer as an antonym of COMELY.

3. COGITATE means to think hard, ponder or meditate about something. RUMINATE also means to think about something. EXCOGITATE means the same as COGITATE, that is devising or inventing something by thinking about it. CATECHIZE means to give out instructions. Hence, it can be seen that FORGET is the correct answer as it is an antonym of COGITATE as INATTENTIVE does not necessarily mean the opposite of thinking.

4. AMELIORATE means to become better or to make more bearable and MELIORATE carries the same meaning. RETROSPECT is used in reference to contemplation of the past or a survey of events that took place in the past. CONVALESCE means to recover health and strength after an illness. LESSEN may be used in reference to quantity or sometimes a condition whereas DETERIORATE is always used to refer to becoming worse in condition and therefore, it is an antonym of AMELIORATE.

5. MUTATE means to change or alter. MODIFY carries the same meaning. TRANSMOGRIFY means to change in appearance or form, especially strangely or grotesquely. TRANSMUTATE is used to refer to the process of changing or transforming in appearance, nature, or form. In view of the above, it can be seen that PRESERVE stands out as the antonym of MUTATE. CONTINUE is a weaker word as compared to PRESERVE as it cannot be specifically referred to as the opposite of the action to MUTATE.
