Admission to graduate and postgraduate programs are granted on the basis of the GRE exam scores. The GRE exam is a standardized exam for applicants who seek admission to graduate and business schools in most of the English-speaking countries. The GRE exam was created and administered by (ETS) Educational Testing Service. It tests the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing skills acquired over a period of time and it is not related to any particular field of study. The GRE exam is structured as a section-adaptive test in most locations across the world. It is given in 2 versions, paper-based and computer-based. The importance of GRE score ranges from being a mere formality to an integral part of the admission process, but indisputably it is one of the major requirements to obtain admission into a business/graduate school.
ETS is a private concern that conducts research related to education, competitive tests like SAT, GMAT, TOEFL, TOEIC, etc and also conducts periodic educational tests for students and faculty. One of the most important tests administered by ETS is the GRE test. Based on the GRE scores, students can be judged fairly in the admission process. ETS has joined with Hobsons U.S., a prominent media company that helps in student enrolment and educational services.
The score scale for the GRE Analytical Writing is on a range of 0-6 with half-point increments. Though you are given 2 different essays to write about in the GRE test, a single score will be given for both. These scores are given by two examiners who evaluate the essays. If the scores for both essays differ by more than a point, then a third examiner determines the score. The final scores are averaged and rounded up to the nearest half-point. When your essays are being scored, the ETS detection software and examiners check your essays for any similar text found in comparison to other examinees’ essays, or any content that has been copied, or not original in form. If found so, your scores will not be considered valid. Your scores can be reviewed six months after the GRE test. You can request the ETS to do so. Along with the GRE General Test scores, a percentile score is given to compare your scores with those of other examinees who have taken the test in the past 3 years.
The GRE Analytical section evaluates your thinking and reasoning skills rather than your writing skills. Both the essays balance each other as one task tests your writing skills and how you put forward your own perspective of the issue. The other essay is an assessment of your critical analytical skills and how you evaluate the writer’s argument and assumptions. For the duration of the GRE Analytical Writing test, you will be provided with a basic word processor that does not have a spell-check or a grammar dictionary so as to be on par with examinees who attempt the paper-based GRE test.
It is best to prepare well for the GRE Analytical Writing test as you will be given a diverse range of topics for essay-writing.
